Russian Winter Festival

The Russian Winter Festival is a holiday event at Hillwood Estate celebrating Russian traditions.

Russian Winter Festival - Hillwood Estate Tour

The Russian Winter Festival is held annually at Hillwood Estate, the former home of Marjorie Merriweather Post, a businesswoman and socialite with an extensive collection of Russian art. She inherited what is now known as General Foods from her father, and became the wealthiest woman in the United States. Her third husband was an ambassador to the Soviet Union in the 1930s, and during this time, Marjorie acquired much of her Russian art, including a large number of Fabergé eggs.

After you arrive at Hillwood Estate, look at the schedule in the visitor center to see when the Grandfather Frost and the Snow Maiden play will be performed. Although this is dubbed as a “family play,” it is entertaining for adults as well. The play lasts about 20 minutes and tells the story of a Russian folktale. Despite the small number of performers and limited props, it is an enjoyable and well-done performance that is worth checking out. The play is usually performed once an hour.

I recommend visiting the craft area first to get the best selection of supplies for making your kokoshnik (lady’s headdress) or “fur” hat. Jewels, ribbon, colorful paper, furry material and other supplies are scattered around the tables. Let the staff know which style of hat you’d like to make, browse the tables for supplies that match your personal aesthetic, and find a seat to get to work assembling it. Don’t forget to take a group photo with your friends in your Russian style hats!

After taking in all the festive activities, you can also tour the mansion decked out for the holidays. The ornate home is now a museum showcasing Marjorie’s ornate furniture, porcelain, art, and wardrobe. Tours are self guided, and all bags and coats must be checked before you begin exploring. An audio tour is available from the visitor center or as a mobile app, but it is not needed to enjoy the mansion. Christmas trees, poinsettias, garland, and other holiday decorations transform the house into a lavish holiday display.

You are also able to explore the grounds, but they are best viewed in the spring and summer when the gardens are green and lush. The greenhouse has some beautiful orchids, and can be a good place to warm up. Russian folk music and dancing is performed throughout the festival in a tent near the back of the grounds by the cafe.

The Russian Winter Festival is a fun holiday event with a cultural twist. Those ready to take part in all the various activities will have the best experience for the cost of admission. Due to the price, I won’t be attending every year, but it is worth attending at least once.
